The Everything Store
Quechee, Vermont ~ Miami Beach, Florida
Established 1993

“…I played “Store” until I was 14. My sister, six years younger than me, and I would play store when on vacation at our family’s house in Vermont. We called it “The Everything Store,” because before she was born, and until she was old enough to fake-answer the fake-phone, I would sell everything that was in my grandfather’s study back to my grandfather, and any other family members who would come in to my shop. I kept meticulous invoices with carbon copies, some of which are still stowed away in Vermont. Each shopper got a member number and a fully itemized receipt. I loved the adding machine. Once my sister was old enough, I trained her to work at the “store” and when our grandfather passed away, we started selling imaginary sporting goods, specializing in down hill skiing gear. We upgraded our system and started keeping inventory on the computer. Anyone that would have overheard us would have totally bought it. We were professionals. Our books were in perfect order and I was very proud of my fine establishment. This was my playtime.”
